Neon.

I am only posting one photo for Times Square because you really only need one photo. Sure I could give you a 360 of the M&M sign, the close up of the Broadway Neons, and the blur of Taxi Cabs. But this one is really is, the skewed angle of Times Square, everyone will notice different things about it...but nobody misses the big picture.
It's magical, that first time your head rises above the stairs at the subway station right in the center of it. It's magic because you have no idea where to look first, and it's magic because you instantly smile. I've spent lots of time in Times Square now, and that smile has never faded from time to time. I especially like how it is more crowded at 1am than it is at 1 in the afternoon, it makes it just that much more amazing.

Stomping Through

I shot this photo off my camera phone during the summer of 2008 on July 5th. I had spent the 4th of July standing beside the Brooklyn Bridge admiring the fireworks exploding above the city skyline of Manhattan. No matter where in the United States you spend that 4th night, nothing can beat it under the Brooklyn Bridge. Not a fabulous photo, just a fabulous night to remember.

And on a completely different note ... here's a reflection of a man stomping through a puddle in Greenwich Village. Just a moment.

Oh Brooklyn Brooklyn...

Quoting The Avett Brother's new song, "Ah Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in/Are you aware the shape I'm in?" The Brooklyn Bridge and the area around DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights is one of my favorite corners of New York City. The Brooklyn Heights promenade is a favorite walk of mine. The Manhattan skyline floats on top of the water across the way, and the peace the stroll brings is magic. Last summer, on a 90 degree day, I sat with some friends on a bench on the promenade, eating a messy but delicious slice of Grimaldi's Pizza. A classy day in Brooklyn.

Later that night...

It was just perfect.

Chocolate and Cheeseburgers

They just opened a Five Guy's Burgers near where I live in Washington. I just don't think i can eat there. The magic of the juicy Five Guy's cheeseburger to me is settling down in the cozy Brooklyn Heights to enjoy a famous burger, fries and a classic red cup of soda. The cold February day this was taken on left my mouth watering, and wanting more.

Another New York City culinary pleasure is Max Brenner's. The "Willie Wonka" of New York. Here, with some friends enjoying Banana Split Sugar Waffles, I snapped a photo of the "before" of the scene. Minutes later, the plates were clean. The room smells like velvet melted chocolate. As people walk in, they instantly stick up their noses, inhale and say, "mmmm."

This photo continues to stay in my "favorite-photo-that-I've-ever-taken" category. My friend was holding her camera up in Central Park and this reflection of the skyline appeared. We stood there for awhile, moving her camera up and down, side to side, to get the angle and reflection just right. It turned out almost perfect. New York City - through Central Park - through a camera. Worked out nicely.

This is a simple photo. Just standing on the overlooking walkway, looking at how beautiful Wollman Rink is in the winter time. This was taken on valentines day.

Two.

My name is Emily Woodbury. I am 18 and living right outside the city of Seattle in a small seaside suburb. New York City has always been my home. My photography has taken my lens and led me right to the heart of the city. These photos represent how I see "The Big Apple" and what it sees in me. All digital photos shot with a Nikon D40, film scans shot with a Nikon FM.

I shot this photo at Coney Island over a year ago, and at the time it was my favorite photo. The diverse culture that this attraction holds, bringing people from all over the world to hear its stories makes it one of the most magical places in the world. Waiting for some friends to catch up, I saw a tourist family feeding a flock of Seagulls. One of those moments you just have to capture.

This photo was shot just a few minutes behind the first. The simply painted trash cans at Coney Island bring a sort of lightness to the boardwalk.

The Unofficial Start

It's going to start now. But not officially. The photos posted between now and August will be past photos I've taken in New York City. I'll be moving to the city in late August for school, and will update more frequently then. But until then...these are my scenes so far.
